David Finlay launched a vicious verbal assault on his own bloodline and a top AEW star after his recent comments about the WWE legend’s son.
The aforementioned star, who is a member of The Hurt Syndicate, is Shelton Benjamin. David Finlay became an official part of AEW a while back. He and his partner, Clark Connors, are set to team up with The Demand and Mark Davis to square off against Chris Jericho, The Hurt Syndicate, The Young Bucks, and Jack Perry in a Stadium Stampede match at Double or Nothing 2026.
Ahead of the pay-per-view, Shelton Benjamin shared his history with David Finlay’s family (Fit Finlay & his mother), and said that he was like a big brother to him. The Dogs member took notice and sent out some heated choice of words for his family and Benjamin via his X account. David acknowledged Fit Finlay as Benjamin’s trainer, but said that only half of his children became great wrestlers, and that he would finish the former WWE star’s schooling in their upcoming match at Double or Nothing
“Shelton’s proud my dad trained him, yet Fit is a notoriously terrible trainer. Even only 50% of his sons ended up being great. Don’t worry though Shelty, I’ll finish your schooling at Double or Nothing.”
David Finlay’s reason for joining AEW instead of WWE
David Finlay has been considered a promising second-generation star in professional wrestling. He has adopted his father, Fit Finlay’s, fierce in-ring style and made significant waves in independent promotions, especially in New Japan Pro Wrestling. However, David left NJPW in February 2026 and joined AEW, where he reunited with his NJPW factionmates, Clark Connors and Gabe Kidd, a month later.
At the same time, it was rumored that David Finlay had interest from WWE regarding a potential signing. Sean Ross of Fightful revealed on X that he spoke to Fit Finlay’s son about the same. He told him that he made less money working with his father and brother than working with Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors, and chose to sign with the Jacksonville-based promotion instead.
“I’ve never made money with my dad and my brother. I’ve made a lot of money with Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors.”
With David set to be part of a significant match at Double or Nothing 2026, it remains to be seen whether his side will emerge victorious.
