AEW has finally announced what the resolution will be for the TBS Championship, as this has been vacated and is up for grabs. This will feature several matches and will conclude next month with one blockbuster contest.
A little more than a week ago, Willow Nightingale revealed that she had sustained an injury during her title defense against Red Velvet two weeks ago. This looked to be more serious than expected, as this resulted in her relinquishing the belt. The promotion did not immediately reveal how the new champion would be crowned, which led to some confusion among many.
Earlier tonight on AEW Collision, they finally addressed this. Tony Schiavone and Nigel McGuinness broke the news that there will be 6 qualifying matches, with the winners advancing to the promotion’s first-ever Survival of the Fittest match.
This match type was made famous by Ring of Honor and is a 6-person elimination match. This will take place on the July 1st episode of AEW Dynamite and will be for the vacant TBS Championship.
Willow Nightingale’s run as the TBS Champion was memorable as she was the one to end Mercedes Moné’s long title reign. Now several top names on the roster are going to slug it out to qualify for Survival of the Fittest. It will be interesting to see who could be in the match and whether there could be some surprises in store.
ROH’s Survivor of the Fittest matches have always been must-see. The match at Supercard of Honor, which saw Athena brave the storm to defend her belt, was not an easy path for the champion, as she could have easily been pinned by any of the five competitors.
This upcoming match for the belt is one where individual performances will be rewarded. It remains to be seen who will step up and take the belt.
