WWE star Gunther shockingly mentioned the AEW name, which seemed like a hint for a blockbuster rematch soon.
The aforementioned star in question is Zack Sabre Jr. The Ring General has risen to become one of the most dominant heels in WWE. He has won multiple championships, set historic title reigns, and retired marquee names like Goldberg, AJ Styles, and the Greatest of All Time, John Cena.
During an interview with No-Contest Wrestling, the hosts asked Gunther about the wrestlers who influenced his career. The Career Killer revealed that it was mostly European wrestlers like Kenta Kobashi and Stan Hansen. Furthermore, Gunther added that stars like Zack Sabre Jr., with whom he worked closely in the ring and had his first big matches, were major career shapers for him.
“I would say that the guys I watched is … it was mostly, mostly influenced outside by European wrestlers or guys that wrestled in Japan. Kobashi was one of the guys that I looked up to, Stan Hansen, I was a big Stan Hansen guy, Terry Gordy those guys and the thing that I really learned the most from was like from guys that I tightly worked with … over the years. The first big matches, my really first big matches in my career were Zack Sabre Jr. and Daisuke Sekimoto, and those were like really long-lasting experiences for me with them.” – [34:26 – 35:08]
Zack Sabre’s last appearance in AEW came in 2024 at the All In event. Following that, he has been making appearances on the independent circuit. With Sabre being an independent contractor, and Gunther namedropping him, there could be a possibility of WWE bringing him to their promotion in the near future and setting the stage for this epic and box-office collision in the Stamford-based promotion.
Gunther is set to challenge for the Undisputed title at WWE’s next Premium Live Event
After WrestleMania 42, Gunther moved to the SmackDown brand and began a feud with the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. The Ring General had multiple altercations with him, leading to a title match between them being made official for WWE Clash in Italy on May 31.
With a huge opportunity for the former World Heavyweight Champion, it remains to be seen if he will be able to dethrone The American Nightmare in Italy.
