Neverness to Everness (NTE) has a pretty deep combat system with multiple layers of mechanics. Players will have to go extra steps from the occassional button-mashing amidst the fast-paced fights. Knowing how perform basic interactions, and setting up a team correctly, are necessary when it comes to defeating the most challenging enemies in the early and endgame.

This article goes over the combat system of NTE, explaining everything a player should know to prepare themselves before a fight.

Complete combat guide in Neverness to Everness (NTE)

The basic aspects in NTE’s combat includes:

  • The standard actions of your equipped character.
  • Character roles.
  • Dodge.
  • Enemy’s break meter.
  • Specific character actions leading to extra damage to an enemy’s break meter.
  • Parrying.
  • Esper cycles.
  • Elemental attributes.
  • Setting up a team to make characters eligible for Esper cycles.
  • Esper cycle reactions based on a character’s attribute and Esper cycle rotation.

Let us go over each aspect in detail.

1) Standard actions

Characters in NTE can perform the usual actions in combat, such as Basic Attack, Heavy Attack, Plunge Attack, Special Skill, Ultimate ability, and a special aiming skill for the ranged characters.

2) Character roles

Upon heading to the character screen, you will notice a couple of tags underneath your equipped character’s name. For example, in the image below, Jiuyuan has “Solid” and “Damage” under her name.

The “Damage” tag signifies her role in a team, meaning she excels in dealing damage. Similarly, you will find “Buff,” and “Survival” under other characters, which should be self-explanatory. As for the “Solid” tag, it shows the type of “Arc” that character can equip.

Each team should have one of each role, alongside a secondary Damage or Buff option in the fourth slot, depending on your equipped characters.

3) Dodge

You can perform dodge against an enemy attack, especially when the enemy is about to perform an action. In most cases, you will be notified of that action with a red spark on the enemy, which will be your cue to perform the dodge.

4) Enemy’s break meter and how to deal extra damage to it

Every enemy will have another white-colored meter below their health bar, which will drain based on your attack on the enemy. Basic attack, skill, and ultimate ability are often enough to break an enemy.

However, the best way to deal lots of damage to it is to dodge an enemy’s attack at the perfect time window, therefore triggering a critical dodge, and then follow up with a basic attack.

Doing so in a fight will significantly make things easier for you against bosses and smaller enemies as well.

5) Parrying

You can parry certain enemy attacks in NTE, especially the ones that are indicated by two red circles closing in on an enemy.

You will need to perform an action just when the circle is about to close in. The list of actions you can perform include Basic Attack, Skill, Plunge Attack, Character Swap, and Esper Cycle.

The strongest action for parrying will be your Esper Cycle, as you don’t have to time it perfectly against an enemy’s closing circle for the parry to happen.

6) Esper Cycles

Esper Cycle is special mechanic in Neverness to Eveness’ combat, where you can fill up a meter upon performing different actions, allowing another eligible character in your party to swap in and perform an elemental reaction. More detail on elemental reactions will be mentioned below.

You can determine the exact moment when a character will be up for Esper Cycle rotation via the Esper meter located on the left side of your character’s health bar. Furthermore, the character who is ready to be switched in via the Esper Cycle will have a special effect around their portrait on the right, as shown in the image above.

7) Elemental attributes, team setups, and elemental reactions

There are six known elemental attributes right now in Neverness to Everness, namely:

  • Cosmos
  • Anima
  • Incantation
  • Psyche
  • Chaos
  • Lakshana

Each of these attributes can form a reaction with another one, via a character’s Esper Cycle rotation in combat. For example, refer to the team setup in the image below.

In the attribute circle located on the bottom-right, Psyche and Lakshana are next to each other. This means that the team above, with Skia as Lakshana, and Haniel/Fadia as Psyche, are eligible for Esper Cycle with one another, and for triggering an elemental reaction.

In their case, Lakshana and Psyche creates the Stain reaction.

The same applies to all the characters, as long as the team is being setup by respecting the elemental attribute circle. A Lakshana character is eligible with a Psyche and a Cosmos character, but not with a Chaos character, since Lakshana is not directly linked with Chaos in the circle.

Lastly, before going into a challenging encounter, it is best to look out for the recommended elemental attribute for the fight, and adjust accordingly.
