Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti has urged the club to steer clear of Benfica boss Jose Mourinho even as current head coach Alvaro Arbeloa is set to end the season without any silverware.

Mourinho had a successful stint at the Santiago Bernabeu between 2010 and 2013, leading Los Blancos to a record-breaking La Liga title but didn’t win the UEFA Champions League.

Since then, the ‘Special One’ has had spells at Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma and Fenerbahce before arriving at his current club, Benfica, in September.

Fast forward eight months, Arbeloa – who replaced Xabi Alonso at the Bernabeu in January – might not be at the helm beyond the summer. Amid speculation that Mourinho could be brought in, Guti reckons the club should explore other options, as the Portuguese is past his prime (as per GOAL):

“Mourinho is a great coach, but I think his prime phase is not now – in the sense that he comes from Fenerbahce, he took Benfica at a very bad time, and I think there are coaches in a better state than Mou that I would sign.”

Going back to Mourinho, since leaving the Bernabeu 13 years, he has won seven major trophies. That includes the Premier League with Chelsea (2015), the UEFA Europa League with Manchester United (2017) and the UEFA Europa Conference League with AS Roma (2022).

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe has been diagnosed with an injury to the “semitendinosus muscle in his left leg,” as per an update on the club’s website on Monday (April 27).

The French striker had to be subbed off in the 1-1 La Liga draw at Real Betis at the weekend due to discomfort in his leg. Madrid looked set to take the three points, thanks to Vinicius Junior’s first-half opener, only for Hector Bellerin to equalise in the 94th minute.

While he’s out of the upcoming trip to Espanyol on Sunday (May 3), uncertainty remains about Mbappe’s availability for the El Clasico trip to leaders Barcelona a week later.
