Dustin Poirier kicked up an online storm after naming his top five lightweights ever. Poirier would know a thing or two about the best lightweights after having faced the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev, and Charles Oliveira.
The trio all won the UFC lightweight title and have been impressive in their careers, with Nurmagomedov having retired a while back.
Makhachev and Oliveira are still going strong and currently hold the welterweight title and BMF title, respectively.
However, Poirier had a couple of interesting takes in his list of five. He was sharing the names in response to a fan question about the top five lightweights. He included Nurmagomedov and Makhachev, but omitted Oliveira while adding Ilia Topuria.

“Of all time? Khabib [Nurmagomedov], Islam [Makhachev], BJ Penn. This is where it gets tough…Ilia [Topuria] OK, we can put him in there…Frankie Edgar,” said Poirier.

BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar are UFC legends. Penn won the welterweight and lightweight championships while Edgar also held the lightweight title and challenged for other titles in his career.
Topuria was an interesting pick, to say the least. ‘El Matador’ is the current lightweight champion and has defeated Max Holloway, Alexander Volkanovski and Oliveira, but only two of his wins have come in the lightweight division and some might say he hasn’t really been challenged there.
The other interesting omission was of Oliveira’s. The Brazilian is a former lightweight champion and holds several records for his time in the UFC.
Many fans took exception to Poirier’s picks. While some questioned him including Topuria, others brought up the fact that Oliveira was not mentioned.
Here are some of their reactions from social media:
It is also interesting to note that Poirier lost to Makhachev, Nurmagomedov, and Oliveira during his time in the UFC.
Poirier retired from the UFC after losing to Holloway at UFC 318. He is a former UFC lightweight interim champion, but never got to hold the undisputed title despite challenging for the gold thrice.
