Canadian bantamweight Jamie Siraj is set to make his UFC debut this weekend against John Yannis at Canada Life Center, Winnipeg, Canada. As the 31-year-old finally steps onto MMA’s biggest stage, he does so after overcoming immense adversity in his personal life.
Siraj is 14-3 in his career and 4-1 in his last five outings. He was most recently seen scoring a second-round submission win over Adonilton Matos at BFL 86 in February.
Interestingly, the Pinnacle Combat Martial Arts Academy affiliate was reportedly set to compete on Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) in 2019. However, the opportunity coincided with a serious health crisis.

What illness did UFC debutant Jamie Siraj suffer from?
A BCIT News report cites MMA journalist James Lynch confirming that Jamie Siraj had an offer to fight on DWCS after a 2019 breakout performance over Blake Sigvaldason in RISE FC.
However, the fighter unfortunately couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity to break into the big leagues as he developed a serious health condition, Hyper-IgE syndrome, leading to near-fatal complications. Talking to the media outlet, Siraj recalled how the doctors told his family that he was not going to make it:
“I ended up becoming septic and ended up in a coma. I was very much ready to just leave the world.”
Hyper-IgE syndrome is a rare primary immunodeficiency characterized by markedly high IgE levels, along with eczema, recurrent skin abscesses, lung infections, and eosinophilia.

Jeremy Brand, founder of MMA Sucka, who has followed Siraj since he was a teenager, told BCIT that he feared the Vancouver native would not recover. Brand remembers the fighter’s face becoming unrecognizable during the worst phase of the illness.
That said, Siraj overcame his condition. And now, as he is set to grace the famed octagon, he carries additional motivation: fatherhood. Almost a year before the BCIT interview, his baby boy was born. Siraj says:
“My little boy was born. Once he was born, everything changed… my priorities, my perspective on life. [My son is] absolutely 100% the reason why I do this. My little boy is my entire world. There’s a lot of sleepless nights. There’s a lot of days when I’m exhausted. It doesn’t matter if you’re tired. The work’s got to get done.”
