Normal (2026) is a mix of action and crime-thriller genres, featuring character-centric stories alongside a multi-layered mystery. Directed by Ben Wheatley and penned by Derek Kolstad, Normal (2026) is essentially a crime thriller that unfolds in a small town, with the protagonists discovering that the town hides a complex crime world.
The film also represents the next teaming up of writer Kolstad and actor Bob Odenkirk, who have previously worked together.
It is primarily an action movie, but with a robust thriller component, so it subtly incorporates the three pillars of the genre: suspense, investigation, and characters’ internal struggles.
A seemingly untroubled town forms a setting for the plot, thereby focusing on the twin faces of a too calm city vis-à-vis the underlying tension.
The movie premiered at TIFF on September 7, 2025, and will release in U.S. theaters on April 17, 2026, starring Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler, and Lena Headey.

Normal (2026) had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2025, during the Midnight Madness program. This first showing allowed the film to be seen by viewers before its broader distribution.
After its showcase at the festival, the movie is set for a theatrical release in the US on April 17, 2026. It will be released by Magnolia Pictures, which is planning to make the film available in about 2,000 cinemas. This is among the largest releases of the company to date.
The release of the movie is also reaching the international markets, with different companies managing the release in different regions. These are Sky Cinema for the UK and Amazon MGM Studios for the likes of Canada, Scandinavia, Australia, and New Zealand. Besides that, there are European distribution partners as well, which means the film has a wider global release.
The shoot for the movie started in October 2024 in Winnipeg and kept going for the next few months. The script had been penned a few years back, before Kolstad did Nobody.
Through their efforts together, Kolstad and Odenkirk were able to produce the final screenplay, which served as a motivation for the film’s direction.
