Crimson Desert features many different mechanics required to interact with its massive world, including weapons, tools, intriguing NPCs, and fast travel points. As the sun goes down, the world of Pywel becomes incredibly dark, and you will need a reliable light source. Thankfully, there are lanterns that you can equip to help you navigate the nighttime.
Beyond simple visibility, you will also require a lantern for tasks like solving puzzles and activating specific fast travel points. Using a lantern is a quick and easy process, but things can get a little tricky if you do not know how to access or properly use it. Here’s how to use lanterns in Crimson Desert.
How to properly use lanterns in Crimson Desert

Just like equipping any weapon in the game, you will need to access your quick inventory via the radial menu. If you are on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox console, press the left button on the D-Pad to bring up this menu. Here, you will find all your important items, including the lantern. If you are on PC, the default key to access this menu is F2.
Once you are in the radial menu, press the X button (PS5), the A button (Xbox), or use your mouse to select it on PC. This will equip the lantern and turn it on. You don’t need to worry about holding it, as the lantern will remain attached to Kliff’s belt, leaving your hands free for combat. Once it’s on, you can simply walk around to light up the space around you.
If you want to focus the light on a specific spot, which is often necessary for solving environmental puzzles, you can do so by pressing and holding L1 (PS5), LB (Xbox), or the Left Control key (PC). Many puzzles, including those required to unlock fast travel spots, vary in difficulty, and some are hidden in dark corners that can only be revealed with your lantern.
Crimson Desert is one of the most ambitious games of recent times, and its scope is impressive, to say the least. While early reviews from critics were mixed, the general consensus among the community is that players simply need to invest a bit of time into the world to reach the best parts.
