Liverpool boss Arne Slot has opened up about facing Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. He referenced their clash last season and expressed confidence in his side after beating Galatasaray.
The Reds hammered Galatasaray 4-0 at Anfield in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday. They qualified for the quarter-finals with a scoreline of 4-1 on aggregate, having lost 1-0 in the reverse leg. They will now face defending champions PSG, who hammered Chelsea 8-2 over two legs in the Round of 16.
Thanks for the submission!
After the game against Galatasaray, Liverpool boss Arne Slot opened up about facing PSG and told TNT Sports (h/t Metro):
“Last season, when we lost against them, we were completely outplayed away from home. I think we played a great game here at Anfield but in the end we lost on penalties. To be fair, they haven’t dropped their standards. It was hardly possible for them to improve but they’ve been very impressive until now.”
“But I think after seeing our performance tonight, they won’t be that happy to be playing against us, especially because also last season we were the only team that could bring them to extra-time and penalties,” he added.
Liverpool and PSG faced off in the Champions League Round of 16 last season. The Parisians won on penalties after the aggregate score remained 1-1 after two legs.
Ex-Liverpool star opens up about their upcoming clash against PSG
Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman also shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s clash against PSG. He claimed that the Parisians’ form has dropped from last season, and hence, the Premier League giants stand a good chance. He said:
“It depends what PSG turns up. Everybody focused on what they’ve just done to Chelsea, but if you go back two games, they only just knocked out Monaco in the play-off round, they struggled against Newcastle at the Parc Des Princes.”
“So their form hasn’t been as good as it was last year, but it’s just whether they are hitting form now. They’re an outstanding team and they’re starting to peak at the right time, but they’re not as dominant as they were last year. Not by far,” he added.
PSG finished 11th in the league stage of the Champions League this season and beat AS Monaco 5-4 on aggregate in the playoffs. They are first in Ligue 1 standings, just a point above RC Lens with a game in hand.
