Shedeur Sanders has been trying his best to become the Cleveland Browns’ QB1, but one moment may have hurt his case.

During Wednesday’s OTAs, the second-year quarterback aimed a pass towards wide receiver Jerry Jeudy in a 7-on-7 scrimmage. However, it was deflected and eventually landed in the hands of cornerback Myles Bryant:

There was much ridicule and condemnation over the play:

@DanielOyefusi Is that Jeudy? That dude be selling Shedeur on purpose

@DanielOyefusi Shedeur took a few extra miliseconds to throw. Jerry decided to wait for the ball instead of going for it. I don’t think either of these guys gives us the best shot.

@DanielOyefusi Of course the deflection happens with Jerry Jeudy 😆 just like last season.

@DanielOyefusi @OssacinDucktail Jeudy tried to catch it with his chest instead of his hands🤦🏾‍♂️

@DanielOyefusi Why did Judy stop running ! Omg! Judy is the ops

@DanielOyefusi @skobuffss Jerry Heudy is annoying bro 😂. He doesn’t fight for the ball.

Dillon Gabriel, the Browns’ other second-year quarterback, also had an interception. After practices, coach Todd Monken described the turnovers as “embarrassing”.

Nevertheless, he had nothing but good words about Sanders’ progression:

“Shedeur’s come miles, in terms of his progressions, getting the ball out, his understanding of concepts. I think he’s really, really come a long way.”

He also had similar things to say about Deshaun Watson, who is attempting a comeback from two tears to his right Achilles tendon:

“He’s been great. I think everybody would say it. I’m all for a clean slate. … I think it’s really cool that he still has an opportunity, with a change, to showcase his ability and see where he’s at. I’m all for it. … To come back and want to battle, want to further his career and change the narrative – I think it’s really cool.”

Shedeur Sanders still has an opportunity to wrest Browns’ QB1 job from Deshaun Watson, says insider

While Deshaun Watson is said to be the favorite to be the Browns’ starter come Week 1, Shedeur Sanders still has a chance to seize the job in dramatic fashion.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot recently visited 92.3 The Fan’s “The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima” to give an update on the QB1 competition, and that was when she surprisingly deviated from her past take that Watson should be the primary passer from Day 1:

“Shedeur still has an opportunity to come from behind and take this thing over. … Deshaun is coming off two Achilles surgeries and also a shoulder surgery, and he’s 30 years old. Just because he starts the season doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to finish the season. So, everyone has to be ready.”

The next part of Browns OTAs begins on May 26.
