Millwall take on Hull City in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final on Monday. The first leg at the MKM Stadium in Hull on Friday night ended goalless.

Alex Neil’s Millwall dominated possession (62%) but were profligate with their finishing, recording just one shot on target out of 15, while Hull also had one shot on goal but with nine fewer attempts than the Lions.

The game had a rousing start, with both sides spurning early opportunities to score, with Hull’s Mo Belloumi finding the woodwork from a tight angle. The Lions dominated for large swathes and nearly made the breakthrough, but Ryan Leonard’s effort was ruled out because of a foul in the build-up.

Earlier in the season, Sergej Jakirovic’s Hull needed a 2-1 home win over Norwich City to leapfrog promoted Wrexham – who drew 2-2 at home to Middlesbrough – to clinch the sixth and final play-off place, while the Lions finished third.

On that note, here’s a look at the head-to-head stats and key numbers, match prediction, and betting tips for the Millwall-Hull Championship play-off semi-final at The Den in London:

Millwall vs Hull City prediction

The play-off semi-final is finely poised ahead of the all-important second leg at The Den. While Millwall have had the stronger end to the season – going unbeaten in six games (winning three) – Hull have won once in eight outings, losing twice.

The Tigers have a slender head-to-head advantage over the Lions and have also dominated recent meetings. Millwall, though, have had a stronger season, finishing a point behind the automatic promotion places to reach the play-offs for the first time in 24 years. They scored six fewer goals in the regular season than Hull but conceded 17 fewer.

However, the Lions have had three unsuccessful play-off campaigns – each ending in the semi-finals – with their most recent one (in 2002) being a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Birmingham City. Meanwhile, Hull have reached the Premier League from both previous play-off campaigns, with the last one coming 10 years ago.

The weight of past failures at this stage could be academic for the Lions against a Hull side with a perfect play-off record, so expect the hosts to reach the final with a narrow win.

Prediction: Millwall 1-0 Hull City
