Perfect Crown episodes 7-8 recap: Hui-ju’s collapse exposes assassination plot on I-an as contract marriage leak sparks chaos

Episodes 7 of Perfect Crown begin with Sung Hui-ju and Grand Prince I-an returning to I-an’s private residence after spending time on the yacht. Hui-ju feels confused about her and I-an’s kiss and tries to rationalise it as a result of the atmosphere and their closeness. In contrast, I-an is happy and accepts the moment for what it means to him.

The next day, Hui-ju is visibly flustered when she runs into him on her way to work. She avoids him quickly, yet spends the day unable to forget their interaction. At the same time, she feels a sense of excitement whenever I-an messages her about their upcoming wedding preparations.

As the wedding date gets set and preparations begin, Hui-ju becomes increasingly self-conscious around I-an. Later they attend a dinner with her father, brother and sister-in-law. Hui-ju is initially reluctant to attend, but eventually agrees.

At the dinner, her father expresses his disapproval of the marriage and expresses worries about the dangers of palace life, mentioning how accidents and deaths are not uncommon there. He asks I-an to protect Hui-ju, but his words anger her.

She confronts him, questioning why he never cared for her when she previously suffers an accident. Hurt and frustrated, she leaves the table and retreats to her room.

I-an follows her and tries to comfort her. Their conversation becomes more personal when Hui-ju asks if he likes her. She attempts to dismiss their kiss from the previous night, claiming it meant nothing and could have happened due to the situation.

I-an firmly denies this and tells her that he has kissed her knowingly because it is her and he openly admits that he likes her. However, he also reassures her that he will honour their contract and grant her a divorce after three years. His words leave Hui-ju emotionally conflicted.

At the same time, the dowager queen meets the prime minister and challenges him. She reveals that she is aware of his feelings for Hui-ju and says she will watch how long he can restrain himself. The wedding ceremony proceeds with grandeur, guided by Hui-ju’s sister-in-law, who comes from a noble family.

After the ceremony, Hui-ju and I-an travel to the palace in their carriages, greeted by cheering crowds gathered on the roadsides. Upon arrival, they stand before the king and are congratulated by the ministers. However, during the proceedings, Hui-ju suddenly feels lightheaded and collapses.

I-an immediately carries her out and rushes her to the hospital, turning the incident into national news. Her father also rushes to the hospital after hearing the news. The doctors soon reveal that Hui-ju has been drugged with a medicine she does not take and has suffered an overdose.

Her father, hearing this slaps I-an across his face and urges him not to let the matter go. I-an agrees and orders the prime minister to conduct a full and public investigation into the palace.

The prime minister Min Jeong-woo initially is angered toward I-an, criticising him for failing to protect Hui-ju even for a day after their wedding. However, he quickly takes charge and begins the investigation despite opposition from the dowager queen.

The investigation soon begins with interrogations of palace maids, Hui-ju’s secretary and staff from I-an’s private residence. Hui-ju soon regains consciousness and I-an rushes to her side.

Overcome with emotion, he hugs her and expresses his fear, admitting that he thought he might lose her. Soon after, he is also called in for questioning and leaves his private secretary to watch over Hui-ju.

During this time, Jeong-woo visits Hui-ju to check on her and discuss the situation. Through their conversation, she learns about the cause of her collapse and begins to recall the events at the wedding.

She remembers tripping over the drink chalices and disrupting their arrangement, after which her secretary has reorganized them. Realising the significance of this detail, Hui-ju suggests that the chalices may have been switched and that the poisoned drink might not have been intended for her.

She asks the prime minister to check I-an’s medication and compare it with the substance found in her system. Her suspicion proves correct. The drug in her body matches I-an’s medication, and he also confirms that the substance is indeed part of his prescribed medicine.

As the dosage is lethal, it becomes clear the attack is intended for him, not Hui-ju, confirming an attempted murder targeting the grand prince. Following this discovery, Hui-ju and I-an move back into the palace under strict security as the investigation continues.

The dowager queen becomes increasingly cautious as the situation unfolds. Her father also grows suspicious and recalls a past confession from the dowager queen in which she has admitted to causing the fire that kills the previous king after his confession is his desire to abdicate in favour of I-an.

Amid the tension, Hui-ju and I-an spend the night together in the palace. As he holds her, I-an admits that the sound of the monitor connected to her reassures him that she is alive and safe. Hui-ju responds by kissing him, reassuring him of her being there.

The next day, the couple attends their first public appearance as newlyweds at their alma mater. Hui-ju steps forward to deliver a speech and introduces herself as the grand princess. However, the event is abruptly disrupted when breaking news reveals that their marriage is based on a contract that will end in three years.

Reporters rush into the auditorium and surround her with questions. Caught off guard, Hui-ju is unable to respond when I-an quickly steps in, shielding her from the reporters and the flashing cameras. Taking her hand then he takes her away. On this note, episode 8 of Perfect Crown ends.
