Pixar has confirmed the production of Monsters, Inc. 3, alongside a release window for The Incredibles 3. The studio is now moving forward with a third Monsters installment to join its upcoming slate of sequels.

While a specific debut date hasn’t been set for Mike and Sulley’s return, The Incredibles 3 is currently targeting a 2028 theatrical release. The announcement was revealed while the studio was promoting its latest film, Hoppers.

Although Pixar has not yet shared plot details or a director for Monsters, Inc. 3, the new movie will mark the first true sequel to the original story, since Monsters University served as a prequel exploring how Mike and Sulley first met in college.

Pixar Animation Studios is preparing an ambitious lineup of films for the rest of the decade, mixing sequels to its most popular franchises with new original stories. Recent reports reveal that the studio is developing several major projects, including Monsters, Inc. 3, Incredibles 3, and Coco 2, along with a number of new animated films.

One of the major announcements includes a third movie in the Monsters, Inc. franchise. It is currently in early development. The original film, released in 2001, followed the adventures of Sulley and Mike Wazowski as they worked at a monster power company that generated energy by scaring children.

While the 2013 film Monsters University explored the characters’ college days, the new project would become the first true sequel to the original story. However, Pixar has not yet revealed the plot, director, or release date for Monsters, Inc. 3.

In addition to the monsters returning, The Incredibles 3 has been given a release window for 2028. This time around, there is a change in leadership as Peter Sohn, who directed Elemental, takes over as the film’s director. However, the original creator, Brad Bird, is still very much involved as a writer and executive producer.

In January 2026, Holly Hunter announced that the voice recording is set to start in March. Pixar is also moving forward with Coco 2, a sequel to the studio’s 2017 musical hit about a young boy named Miguel who travels to the Land of the Dead. The follow-up film is expected to release around 2029, with filmmakers Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina returning to direct the project.

Other upcoming projects from the studio include Toy Story 5, which is scheduled for a release on July 2026. Even Inside Out 3 is reportedly in the works, following the record-breaking success of the second film.

Alongside these sequels, Pixar is developing several original films. One of them is Ono Ghost Market, a fantasy story inspired by Asian folklore about supernatural marketplaces. The project was originally planned as a streaming series before being reworked into a feature film.

Another upcoming project will be Pixar’s first-ever musical, which will be directed by Turning Red filmmaker Domee Shi. Meanwhile, the studio’s latest film, Hoppers, is currently playing in theaters.
